“Ascent brings to the forefront a variety of themes that have been present in my work for a long time. My work has always tied the scientific with the religious, the analytical with the mystical. It’s an attempt to explore questions about our origins and purpose, finding meaning and beauty in the mathematical structure and symmetry of natural objects. Pulling from my personal collection, I paint bones, gems, leaves and insects in formations reminiscent of devotional art.
With these most recent paintings, I am attempting to bring something of a narrative element to the work without losing a dreamlike timelessness, to make something that feels eternal rather than static. By adding a hand in gesture, a wisp of smoke, or the faint outline of an arch, I hope to elevate the scenes to more than simply an arrangement of objects.”
