Been Seeing You Go is a self reflective body of work, commenting on the ceaseless renovation of once-blighted properties as a visible symptom of the accelerated nature of gentrification.
Tim Cavnar is a New Orleans based artist who moved to the city in 2010, following stints on the East Coast and a childhood spent moving around the Midwest. His work explores the wave of changes hitting his city as new residents, including the artist himself, transform everything from individual buildings to entire neighborhoods at a breakneck pace.
Nearly all of the houses and building pictured in this series have been torn down, burned down or remodeled beyond recognition in the short time since these paintings were made. Behind every one of these buildings is a story; of a family displaced, a business moved, and a community trying to keep up and thrive in face of rapid development. These pieces serve as a marker for this moment in the city’s history, giving viewers a space to unpack the loaded implications of gentrification in our city and to consider where we go from here.
